At the same time, it takes a tremendous
amount of energy to transport and treat
water. In fact, the nation’s drinking and
wastewater utilities spend about $4 billion
a year on electricity. Population growth,
the increased use of advanced treatment
technologies, and water conveyance foretell
even greater energy use.
In the past, water users addressed
problems locally. Water rights were
fought over bitterly, and problem solving
We believe that is changing. The Water
Research Foundation is actively working
with partners across the globe to share
information about climate change, energy
management, EDCs, and other issues. At
the same time, we encourage U.S. utilities
to share information and develop joint
approaches to problem solving.
Other changes are afoot. In the future,
different qualities of water will be
reserved for different uses, with the
most highly treated water allocated
to household consumption.
Finally, we believe there will be a
tremendous focus on high-efficiency
water treatment technologies.
Challenges exist amidst all of these changes.
Research plays a crucial role in addressing
problem issues, saving money, and
providing credible information.
“In today’s challenging economic times, the
Foundation provides access to hundreds of
millions of dollars worth of research that
utilities could not afford to do themselves,”
said Roy Wolfe, PhD, manager, Metropolitan
Water District of Southern California.
“Without the Foundation, water utilities would
be left to fend for themselves,” he continued.
“Very likely, that would result in regulations
not based on sound science.”
